The Outer Banks in Currituck County, North Carolina have something for nearly everyone. Sportsmen and women love the surf, both for the waves and the fishing. Charter boats are available for fishing as well, if you prefer water under you instead of sand. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking and canoeing, and other outdoor activities available range from golf to hang-gliding.
Nature lovers have something to see in Currituck County as well. The Mackay Island Wildlife Refuge is a birdwatcher-s paradise, and the Wildlife Education Nature Center offers a close look at the marine and avian life along the Outer Banks.Didn-t catch that? This explains it. What is unique to this area though are the wild horses, free and untamed mustangs, descendents of horses left by the Spanish in the 1500s.
There is much to see here for the history buff as well. The Wright Brothers conducted the first powered flight here at Kill Devil Hills in 1903, and a monument and visitor center provide information about that historic event. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse, erected in the 1880s, still stands and is open to the public.
